Ballet Dreams to Dark Obsessions: Exploring “The Devil and His Goddess” by Slyver Michaela

Harper
Ballet is my world. This year will be no different, even if my new boss is determined to rattle me with his charming smile, witty remarks, and our natural chemistry. I refuse to give in, just as I refuse to acknowledge the danger coming right toward me. At least, I do … Until it’s too late. The nightmare descends, leaving me broken, and only he can help me salvage the pieces.

Perseus
The moment I saw her dance was like getting struck by lightning — hot, fierce, blinding. But that’s who she is, down to her very core. So like a moth to the brightest flame, I’m drawn to her. And though it begins as a game of selfish fun for me, I quickly learn that playing with lightning can never end well. Because this human? She is going to wreck me, and I’m not sure I really mind.

Get The Devil and His Goddess

To those who have lived through the nightmare. You are not broken. May you feel sunshine and rise up like a goddess.
– Dedication

👯I was hooked from the moment I started reading, an obsessed demon who knows how to dance, play instruments and sing, what more could a girl ask for? We meet Harper who’s whole life is ballet. She even has a small ballet studio in her house that she shares with her childhood friend, who also loved ballet, but made a career change. Unlike Harper. 🙊 Dance was my world when I was younger and I love reading stories of the characters going after their dreams from such a small age. I unfortunately don’t think I could move the way I used to, but reading about Harper, her passion, drive and love for dance brings happy tears to my eyes. Knowing it is possible to go for your dreams

I still wasn’t sure if the masked man was real or a momentary lapse in my sense of reality. He hasn’t appeared since Monday night, and honestly, I wasn’t sure if I was happy about that or disappointed.

The fact that I even could be disappointed should’ve been a red flag about my mental state, yet here I was.

I feel we all have a little side to us that is a little strange or out of the norm. I wasn’t into masks before this book… I’m just saying, I may or may not want a mask man now. Degradation isn’t really my kinda yum, but if its yours this is perfect. Harper is not one who wants to be praised when having sex (I love praise, call me a good girl any day), Perseus doesn’t hold back with her “darker” fantasies.

Please let me introduce the demon who got me into masks 🙈 Perseus. An overly obsessed man but only obsessed with her, needing to be near them-with them 24/7, never mad at a little clingy and touch her and don’t walk away. Did I also mention he can sing, dance and play instruments? Also shadows to play with or disappear in. The way he loves may be a little unconventional, maybe dark to some but he is so much more than the demon he thought he was. He pushes Harper out of her comfort zone, supports her in every way possible and is there for her after her nightmare.

Warning! Please read the trigger warnings. This is an amazing book but there is grape and stalking involved in the book. Helpful Spoiler (in my opinion) there are two different types of stalking in this book. One from an actual terrible person, the other is part of Harper’s fantasy kinks. Being chased and told to run with someone who she cares for like Perseus. It is completely different than the terrible person stalking. I hope this helps

Helpful Spoiler (in my opinion) to help you read chapter 27 (this is the chapter with grape). I am someone who hates grape, its not a trigger for me I just prefer not to read those scenes. Gives me too much anxiety. Anywho, I would read up until Harper is handed a water bottle from a certain coworker at her house for practice. She starts to get dizzy , this is the part that I skimmed through until the last page. You do find out who it is after Harper is handed the water bottle, but they do talk about this terrible person in other chapters. If you are okay with waiting.

You do not need to read the series in order but it does shed light on some of the side characters in the book. The main characters from book 1 The Devil and His Sparrow make an appearance as well as the rest of the band. I believe these story overlap and take place at the same time more or less

Scenes That Hurt My Heart

I kept my gaze fixated on the floor and waited to feel that same bubbling excitement that came from a moment like this. I waited to feel my smile stretch across my face or to feel determination set in. But instead, there was… nothing. I was empty. Hollow. Numb.

If you’ve ever lost your spark or joy for something you love, you get this, It took me years, maybe even a decade before I wanted to dance again, before I would allow myself to try and move the way I used to be able to. I unfortunately now life with chronic pain and I no longer can dance the way I used to, but I now have the joy and spark to get back out there and enjoy dancing and letting go.

I managed to turn my head enough to see Aiysha, tears coating her brown face, laying on the bed beside me in her jeans and a school-themed sweatshirt. She held my hand in both of hers, and her entire body shook in an effort to keep her crying quiet.

Seeing my chosen sister cry made my own chest constrict, and I immediately hiccuped on fresh tears. Shaking my head against the pillow, I choked, “Aiysha. Aiysha, he –”

“Shh,” she cooed, cupping my cheek with one hand while continuing to squeeze my fingers with the other “You don’t have to say it.” Her eyes flicked over my shoulder.

I followed her line of sight. Perseus leaned against the wall near the bathroom door. Defeat was etched into the lines of his face, and his crossed arms bulged like it was taking everything in him to stay composed.

When his eyes snagged mine, his lips twitch like they were trying to smile but fell short. He pushed off the wall and said, “I’ll let you to talk. I’ll be in the kitchen.”

With that he left the room, shutting the door softly on his way out.

“How-”

Aiysha sniffled as she wiped my tears away. “I’d been worried sick about you. You didn’t talk to me at all yesterday. I thought you were just busy with work then crashed here, but when I got home today and you still hadn’t called or texted, I freaked out. I was literally about to start calling everyone I knew to find you when Perseus showed up at the house, looking for me.”

Aiysha’s lip trembled as her face cracked with fresh anguish. “He told me what happened”

Everyone needs an Aiysha in their lives. Someone who chose you and you chose them to go through life, to be there for each other and so much more. I love their relationship, it reminds me of my best friend who now lives halfway around the world. We are both only children, but we are definitely are chosen sisters

Favorite Quotes

Swooning over her for this demon. My goodness do I love a man who speaks about his feelings, knows what he wants and acts on those feelings

But as Harper smiled softly while watching me, I found I wanted to do this everyday. I’d cook a thousand meals if it made her look at me like that. I was fucked. This feeling wasn’t normal. Something was wrong with me.

When he falls first but doesn’t know it yet. I love when the MMC falls first. Probably one of my favorite tropes

Favorite Scenes

I love the banter between these two, the flirty tension, the secret looks in the workplace. Sneaking away to get some yum at work. Sign me up! I would love it if my husband worked with me, we would do it all the time if it was up to me. On the desk, bathrooms, offices, you name the place, we would do it there, here, anywhere lol
