I don’t think I have read anything quite like this before. The language and writing style is not one I’ve heard before so it did take me a bit to get into the story but wow what a story. A unique take on fairies one I’m not mad at even with all the extra teeth 🫢 I love that Emily named the chapters (are we bringing this back? I think we should), about what was going to happen in the chapter or if it was something someone said. I loved it!
This book was a trip, and gave me a dark yet twisty vibe of Alice in Wonderland. Oh and the spice that hits you in the face, was not expecting that. These two can not seem to keep their hands off each other.
We meet Candace, a girl living in her recently deceased grandmother’s cabin in the woods. Yes, there is actually a cabin in the woods and yes weird things happen in the woods and the cabin. She’s very head strong, believes people/things can be good and follows her heart even if it’s frowned upon. Growing up her grandmother would tell her stories about the fairies that supposedly lived in the woods, of course Candace just thought they were stories until one day she comes face to face with a fairy. I was not expecting this version of a fairy. I would say he is closer to a shapeshifting monster than a fairy. With his extra teeth, tongues, mouths, arms, legs, wings, you name it. Not sure if I’m mad at the extra body parts or not.
You’re a monster. A beautiful monster
During their first encounter the fairy gets injured, Candace takes the beautiful fairy to her cabin to treat his injury. Throughout the book we watch how Candace tries to find help for the fairy as her methods have not been working. We learn more about the fairies and what other things hide in the woods.
Will Candace be able to find the help she is looking for?
“I’ll find you in the woods and in your dreams. Nothing or sleep is safe with thee”
“Men don’t ever need you. Because I want you.”
Devotion is a word few understand. It restructures you, changing who you are until you become the word and nothing more. Some loves consume us and we would never change them. Because without him, I am still water. Rotting. Lifeless. Silent
“Why do you love something that’s not beautiful or kind like me?”
“Because you are both, regardless of what you think. Regardless of what others might think.”
Your body was mine the moment you found me in the woods and your heart, before you ever existed.” I try to say that isn’t possible, yet I can’t talk with his tongue down my throat, in my stomach. His hands pet my knees. “You’ll learn more than you know your name.” Something about that is haunting
