The Allure of “Elemental Affections”: A Thoughtful Review of Jaime Ryanne’s Enchanting Novel

A driven mage. A brooding prince. And a second chance at love…or heartbreak.

Anadae Helm is done with being her family’s political pawn. After nearly three decades, the water mage is determined to forge her own path and further her studies. Cut off from her funds, she’s forced to become a research assistant to a handsome former tutor who only sees her as the pushover she once was.

Prince Ezzyn Sor’vahl believes his duty is to save his kingdom from the magical poison corrupting the land. Finding promising university researchers like Anadae is his only goal. The standoffish prince has no time for love, but when a masquerade party ends with a night in her bed, everything changes.

Furious that any hint of favoritism might ruin her chance to prove her worth, Anadae swears off romance. Yet as she researches a cure for the magical poison and becomes invested in helping Ezzyn’s people, their walls start to crumble. Can their budding feelings survive their ambitions, or will it be too late to pursue the life—and love—of their dreams?

Elemental Affections is the first cozy fantasy romance novel in the Valley of Sylveren series of interconnected standalones. If you love magical universities, spicy second-chance romances, and a hint of angst wrapped in plenty of banter, dive into Elemental Affections!

Anadae Helm is taking her life back after years of being the perfect daughter, keeping her thoughts to herself and doing whatever she thought would make her parents happy. Even getting engaged to a man she doesn’t love, she is only doing it for her parents and the family business.

Finally standing up for herself Dae decides to learn more about her water magic which means leaving the family business, something her parents use against her. And now they have taken away her funds, leaving her to find a job at the university she is now enrolled as a research assistant.

What business did she, a twenty-nine-year-old woman with an Initiate level degree in general studies, have attending a magic-focused school like Sylveren? It was absurd. You were chosen out of hundreds of candidates

Man, restarting your life at 29 years old can’t be easy. Leaving everything you’ve known to finally follow your dreams. I give props to Dae for finally standing up for herself, starting with Brint – her fiancé. A betrothal neither of them wanted, Dae was not cut out for the fake social word that went along with being with Brint and their family businesses. Dae came up with a plan, unfortunately she would need Brint’s help to convince her parents that enrolling into school and leaving the family business was the best choice for her

“We didn’t raise you to be so selfie. Think of-”

“I have done everything you’ve asked of me!” Anadae cried. “When was the last time I asked for something of my own?”

“This isn’t the time to start”

“It never is.”

Reading this scene with Anadae’s mother broke my heart. Having been a people pleaser and wanting so badly to have the approval of my family, I get where Anadae is coming from. Standing up for yourself no matter what it is, is always hard and standing up for yourself to your family is fucking awful (in my experience). Never understanding why they always thought they knew better than me, just because they were older, had lived a bit more, but it’s not my life they were living. How could they know what was best for her when they seem to not even know their own daughter anymore.

Prince Ezzyn Sor’vahl prince is steadfast on saving his kingdom from the poisonous corruption killing the land. His brothers have started to worry about his dedication to saving their kingdom going day and night without stopping, although when his middle brother asks for his help at Sylvren university Ezzyn is hesitant at first, but agrees. He runs into this former student and things start to heat up between the two

But with the promise of no expectations, no overthinking allowed, he wanted to do decidedly unsweet things to her. With her. Wanted to take his time, linger over the taste and scent and feel of all that was Anadae Helm.

Things start to heat up for the former tutor – now fillin professor- and student- now his research assistant, half way through the book. It’s a great intro into spicy scenes if you have only read closed door romances. Nothing too crazy, a sweet cozy romance. Unfortunately there is a third act break up of sorts, but it works out

🔥The magical system mixed with science is probably my new favorite magical system. Mixing together my love for learning and magic I wish I had!
