For the unapologetically fierce women
💋This one is definitely my favorite out of the Sylveren Valley Series. Mistral Heats is the last book in this series and wow did it deliver. Spice, banter and all the tension you could want
💛Head strong, career focused, fierce FMC named Cayla Helm, sister to Anadae Helm who was our FMC in the first book Elemental Affections. Not gonna lie I really didn’t like Cayla in the first couple of books, she was more focused on the family business thinking that the two of them would end up running the family business. But when she found out that Dae had no interest in the family business she almost turned her back on her.
Time to put her wall back in place after she’d foolishly let them down. Thorns out, and not allowing herself to think about the disappointment that tried to well up.
I pretty much always have my walls up now… well I guess it depends on the person I am with. I made the mistake of letting my walls crumble-almost turned to dust- and learned the hard way never to let them fall again. Even now I still have walls up with some of the closest people around me, but time and time again has proved to me that letting your walls fall might feel great at the time is actually a terrible idea. That’s me though.
🌊However, things change for Cayla in this one, we get a look into her life, what it’s been like since her sister left the business and how she is still not where she would like to be in the business. She kind of reminds me of Nesta from ACOTAR. I hated her in the first books but learning more about her and what she was going through made me love her. Jaime did the same thing to Cayla. Cayla is definitely my favorite character in this series!
🪖Oh and let’s not forget about the only man who was able to get under her skin, and make Cayla lower her walls. that man is ranger Nocren Lowe – Sentinel of the Valley. Being a diviner can’t be easy, it’s one of the reasons he has sworn off romance in fear that the other person would use his powers for their own advantage. But the wind keeps whispering to him about some young head strong woman.
Being a diviner, morbid curiosity about one’s end came with the gift. Add in a rough-and-tumble job, and Nocren knew that there were a number of unpleasant, violent ways his life might end. He tried not to have an opinion one way or another, for the alternative was to slowly go mad.
Tonight was an exception. Let death come for him, buried between Cayla’s thighs. It was a much more peaceful way then he’d envisioned he’d go.
🌬️I think fate is playing her games again as she throws these two together at every chance she gets. Lucky for us, as the banter is off the charts, the spice gets spicier and the mystery of the dying land finally gets answers
‼️I highly recommend if you love science, magic of different sorts, adventure and mystery this one is for you
Cayla was about to slam one of the desk drawers in frustration over the dead end, but she checked her childish impulse at the last moment. She could go punch a pillow when she got back to the inn
Girl, same here. Although I sometimes forget to check the childish behaviour.
“When you fell, I thought – I thought..”.”
Cayla hummed softly. “Worried about me, ranger?”
“Yes,” he replied, tone solemn. “Too damn much, and I don’t know why. I don’t form attachments, either, Lady Heartless, not anymore. We hardly know each other, but you… you scared the fuck out of me.”
She hadn’t been backing away with indecision but gathering herself. To go on faith. To jump… for him.
Nocren caught her, crushing her against chest, his nose dropping to her hair. He ignored the ash and debris and smoke, squeezing her tight so he could feel her draw breath. To know she was alive and safe and with him.
“You called you wind. For me.”
He nodded. “I asked it to help you. I’m sorry if it was…abrupt.”
“You said you wouldn’t do that anymore. Not for your family. Not for anyone.”
Nocren slid his hand gently over her hair. “I did say that. But you’re more than anyone.” He brushed the crown of her head with his lips. “You are to me.”
Anadae snorted. “She hasn’t any nurturing instincts left.”
Cayla grasped, hands pressing to her chest in dramatic fashion. “Are you, Anadae the Eldest Daughter, The Perfect One, casting aspersions on our mother’s name? Will wonders never cease.”
She smirked. “Still a brat, I see.”
I love that the girls got to be on better terms, with Cayla finally understanding and being okay with her sister no longer in the family business. Her dream of the two of them working together definitely changed and for the better.
I feel like I can be free with you and still be me, unchanged, and you seem to want it.
