Not even at the first chapter and I’m in tears. This one hits the feels for me. First book in the Aftermath series about three Aid workers trying to figure out their life after a tragic accident. This may by my new favorite book by @ tugged on my heart strings
We meet Will, who works for a high security company/ aid worker that sends him into sometimes dangerous territories, war torn countries like Afghanistan. We learn that Will has a daughter Phoebe and his wife Katie and how Will’s job affects Katie and Phoebe.
Spoilers Ahead
We jump right into Will and Katie packing up their house together as Will’s job has taken a toll on Katie’s mental health. I couldn’t imagine having my husband work in some of these dangerous places, not knowing what is happening over there, consistently worrying if he is okay, or if and when something could happen. Not hearing from them for days or weeks. I would probably lose my mind. Honestly, the partners of Military, aid workers, or whatever job puts your significant other in danger are inspiring, amazing and I don’t know how they do it. I am a needy bitch and need my hubby with me.
Will gets into a serious accident on one of his overseas missions, his injuries are too serious for him to be moved any other way than a medevac. He is rushed to the hospital back in London. Before he arrived Katie got a phone call from Will’s business partner while she and Phoebe were at the park. Katie thought that being divorced she would stop worrying and caring about Will, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. She is with him every step of the way only until he can get back on his own feet and take care of himself… or so we thought.
“I told myself I stopped loving him when I signed the divorce papers, but sometimes in moments like this, I’m not so sure”
I glance at the picture frame still sitting on the mantle, the one neither of us has touched yet. It’s from Phoebe’s first birthday, the three of us smiling so brightly it hurts to look at now. I wrap it in newspaper and place it in a box, my chest tightening as I do.
This scene broke me. I have a similar picture with my parents with me and a birthday cake. Hearing that the divorce was only because of his job and having nothing to do with the other. Having been raised by divorced parents I loved reading about how Will and Katie were feeling about their divorce. How they co-parent together is very similar to how I was raised, it’s about Phoebe as it should be. Neither one of them talks bad about the other parent in front of their child.
