She is the very thing he’s spent his whole life hunting.
He is the very thing she’s spent her whole life pretending to be.
Only the extraordinary belong in the kingdom of Ilya—the exceptional, the empowered, the Elites.
The powers these Elites have possessed for decades were graciously gifted to them by the Plague, though not all were fortunate enough to both survive the sickness and reap the reward. Those born Ordinary are just that—ordinary. And when the king decreed that all Ordinaries be banished in order to preserve his Elite society, lacking an ability suddenly became a crime—making Paedyn Gray a felon by fate and a thief by necessity.
Surviving in the slums as an Ordinary is no simple task, and Paedyn knows this better than most. Having been trained by her father to be overly observant since she was a child, Paedyn poses as a Psychic in the crowded city, blending in with the Elites as best she can in order to stay alive and out of trouble. Easier said than done.
When Paeydn unsuspectingly saves one of Ilyas princes, she finds herself thrown into the Purging Trials. The brutal competition exists to showcase the Elites’ powers—the very thing Paedyn lacks. If the Trials and the opponents within them don’t kill her, the prince she’s fighting feelings for certainly will if he discovers what she is—completely Ordinary.
Met Paedyn, a thief, an ordinary and survivor living on the streets in Loot Alley with her best friend Aden. Trying everyday to just survive, to have food in their belly’s, and a place to call home. Not having a choice of being born ordinary, having to pose as a physic to keep from being banished from the Kingdom of Ilya.
Kai, the Future Enforcer of Ilya, is forced to go to Loot Alley on order of the king of Ilya – also known as his father-to “get rid of the problem” from rumors of an ordinary in Loot Alley. Known for his brutal force and rare Elite magical power that hasn’t been seen in so long.
He’s patient, personable, and fit for the throne like I’m fit for the battlefield.
A King where I am a killer.
A look into the brothers dynamic being the future King and future Enforcer. Showing the difference between their upbringing. Kai forced to be the brutal enforcer we known of today because of the torment, torture and “training” his so called father put him through. Where Kit was thought how to run a kingdom, sit in on counsel meetings, studying books instead of where the best place to kill a man would be. Even though they had very different upbringings that didn’t really affect the relationship between the two. I love that the brothers are still so close to eachother even after growing up the way the did, you would never know.
“I have a mission for you as the future Enforcer.”
“I live to serve”
I live to kill.
My life means the end of someone else’s
Fighting against his father in the only way he can, deceiving him into thinking he is the perfect Enforcer, and he is, just not to his father. Thinking he could care less about the mission he is sent on and just go on the mission to kill and show no feelings. Kai can’t show a stand against his father but he does so in private. Not killing every time he is sent on a mission
Men would likely go extinct without women to coddle them.
Paedyn is one to speak her mind, even when it will get her in trouble. She doesn’t care. One thing I love about her, she isn’t afraid to say what she is thinking. I’m also one. To speak my mind, but I’m also a little caution about just spewing all the things my brain wants to say and what is polite to say lol. Sometimes the inside thoughts spill out
Who knew a run in with The Deliverer of Death would Payden lives forever. Now she is thrown into the Purging Trials, where she may die during the trails. Oh and the banter officially starts when these two meet
“What’s your favorite colour?”
I’d never thought about what my favorite color was before. It never seemed important.
Not until I looked into a pair of ocean-blue eyes and realized that perhaps drowning was a beautiful thing.
Not until I looked into a pair of fiery blue eyes and realized perhaps burning was painless thing.
Not until I looked into a pair of sky-blue eyes and realized that perhaps falling was a peaceful thing.
“Blue” I say
He falls first is definitely one of my favorite tropes, especially when he doesn’t understand what is happening. The banter between Kai and Paedyn *chef kiss*
A relationship Payden wasn’t expecting was a friendship with Kitt, the future King who has the exact same eyes as her fathers killer. Trying to not let her fathers killer influence her feelings towards Kitt, who is nothing like his father. I love the friendship that starts to bloom between these two. Payden trying to see the good in Kitt, and not just the qualities of his father. She hopes he will be a better king then the one before him, hoping to change the way he thinks about the ordinaries living under the Kingdoms noses who aren’t actually plaguing the kingdom
“You have a choice, Kitt. You always have a choice.”
“If I had a choice, then I wouldn’t be in this safe room. I’d be out there, fighting alongside my brother”
….
“Do you want to be king?”
“I don’t want to be a coward”… “No one has ever asked me that before.”
“Yes, well, you’ll find that I often ask questions that I shouldn’t.”
“Don’t stop.” … “Your questions, your thoughts, your contradictions— I want to hear them all”
