I was not expecting this story to turn out the way it did. I was expecting a fantasy Rockstar romance, while yes we got the romance (oh boy) and the demons (fantasy), but what I was not expecting was to have my heart broken by a little girl, nor the relationships between a mother and her daughters.
Now if you do not want spoilers I recommend skipping the rest of the review. But be prepared to get into your feelings, to think of your childhood, your relationship with a parent and a relationship with a younger sister. It was a little slow in the beginning to get myself caught up in this world. Once the story (for me) picked up I couldn’t put it down.
We met Iyla, the FMC human of the story, a 20 year old controlled by her mother with the clothes she wears, what she studies in college, where she lives, what she is allowed to have in her apartment, what she does with her free time, crushing her dreams and to make things even worse, she controls what her daughter eats. In other terms the bitch needs to go. She reminds me of the evil stepmother from Cinderella.
“This apartment, your phone, your bills, all the things I’ve provided for you can be taken away” she continued, a clear warning laced in her tone. “Do you understand me?”
Having finished all her studying Iyla gets invited to Sinners Do it Better from her best friend, A band she has never heard of and to top off the evening they get backstage passes to meet the “demon” vibe, crazy hot, amazing sex rumor band. Trying to get her mothers words out of her head and live for once in her life, what could be bad about losing your virginity to a sex craze (Incubus/succubus)?
Make sure you save yourself for marriage, Iyla. Don’t be one of those dirty girls. You know what happens to girls like that. The consequences that come with having sex
A demon born to feed off the satisfaction of giving their partner an orgasim, turn his life into becoming a rockstar with — you guessed — more demons from Hell. Driven my his hungry, our demon only has eyes for Iyla. What he doesn’t know is she isn’t like everyone else who they gave backstage passes to. She’s a virgin and probably the only thing incubus hate the most. Of course Zagan now gets bound to Iyla for the rest of her life.
Her answer was typically the response people had to my songs and my singing. But sometimes I wished my voice made them want-
“And more,” Iyla added. Everything inside me stilled, and I raised my eyes back to hers. More?
“It makes me want to… I don’t know. Jump. Scream. Fly. It makes me feel like I could do anything and be okay. Like I can really live and be okay.”
Someway into the book the story became more than a rockstar, sex demon bound to a human and into a beautiful story about finding oneself, standing up for what you believe in, your dreams and fighting for your loved one. My heart broke, I ugly cried but it was all worth it
