House of Flame and Shadow: A Book Review

The stunning third book in the sexy, action-packed Crescent City series, following the global bestsellers House of Earth and Blood and House of Sky and Breath.

Bryce Quinlan never expected to see a world other than Midgard, but now that she has, all she wants is to get back. Everything she loves is in Midgard: her family, her friends, her mate. Stranded in a strange new world, she’s going to need all her wits about her to get home again. And that’s no easy feat when she has no idea who to trust.

Hunt Athalar has found himself in some deep holes in his life, but this one might be the deepest of all. After a few brief months with everything he ever wanted, he’s in the Asteri’s dungeons again, stripped of his freedom and without a clue as to Bryce’s fate. He’s desperate to help her, but until he can escape the Asteri’s leash, his hands are quite literally tied.

In this sexy, breathtaking sequel to the #1 bestsellers House of Earth and Blood and House of Sky and Breath, Sarah J. Maas’s Crescent City series reaches new heights as Bryce and Hunt’s world is brought to the brink of collapse-with its future resting on their shoulders.

Get House of Flame and Shadows

Now, I normally don’t have expectations when it comes to books or anything really as feelings get hurt when you have expectations and this is kinda what happened to me reading CC3. I was so excited for the crossover for the endless possibilities, only to kind be let down. Don’t get me wrong I loved that there was a crossover, I just wished we got to see more of the ACOTAR characters.

SJM really knows how to make you feel what the character is feeling or going through. She did it with Kingdom of Ash with Aelin in Maeve’s castle (I can’t remember where exactly, but not the point) and she did it again in this book with Ruhn, Hunt, Baxian. I almost threw up with how much detail went into the Asteri dungeons and what the characters were feeling and the room they had to stay in. I felt like I was there going through it with them. I loved and hated those parts.

Speaking of hating things, did anyone else want to punch Ithan in the face this whole book? I liked Ithan in House of Sky and Breath but for me he took a turn. I feel he was more self pitying himself, the whole “woe is me” thing, I was not for. “Get your shit together, get it all together and put it in a backpack, all your shit, so it’s together. Get your shit together!”  – Morty from Rick and Morty. I get it a lot happened to Ithan, he isn’t sure what to do with life, and his learning his actions have consequences. Moving on from this Alphahole and moving on to another

Despite initially rooting for Tharion to escape the clutches of the River Queen and find his happily ever after, I was taken aback when he ultimately defected to the Viper Queen. It made me rethink my support for him, especially when he only showed improvement towards the end of the book by focusing on others instead of himself. However, his level of self pity was still comparable to Ithan’s, and now I find myself disliking them both.

Lidia’s back must be hurting from carrying this whole book. I absolutely loved all the parts with Lidia in them. Finding out her heritage, confirming she is either a descendant of Aelin’s or a distant cousin at least. Lidia naming her son (we will get there) Bran, WHAT?! My mind blew up, especially when she started explaining where her powers come from and that shifters are the Fae from Throne of Glass. I was really hoping our badass Queen from Terrasen was going to pop in but no. Well, we found out that not only does Lidia work for the Ocean Queen, but she left her twin sons with her to keep them safe in return she would become a double agent.

I couldn’t believe the intense surge of anger I felt towards Bryce and Hunt. It was like a burning desire to just punch them both in the face, but I couldn’t understand why. Maybe it was because some of their scenes together didn’t sit well with me. Don’t get me wrong, I adore their relationship, but this particular rough patch was testing my patience. And when Hunt risked everything to save Bryce from Nothing, I completely lost it. The mechtec suit may have been underwhelming, but the tears streaming down my face were anything but.

Honestly this is a great series and I was hooked from the first page, but there is always one book in the series that doesn’t quite do it for me. This is that book.
